The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards are just around the corner, with the show set to air live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday, September 12th, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) and Pacific Time (PT).

The 2023 MTV VMAs will recognize two legendary artists with special awards. Shakira will receive the Video Vanguard Award, and Sean “Diddy” Combs will be honored with the Global Icon Award. Additionally, both artists will make their comeback performances on the VMA stage after more than 15 years.


This year’s VMAs are going big on hip-hop. Nicki Minaj will be hosting and performing, while Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion will team up for their hot new track, “Bongos.” And that’s not all—Lil Wayne and Metro Boomin will rock the stage, with special appearances by Future, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Swae Lee, and NAV.

The show will also pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, joining the recent trend seen in other awards shows.

Nicki Minaj MTV VMAs performance

This year’s VMAs are not only for hip-hop fans; they’re also putting on performances for Latin music enthusiasts. Alongside Shakira, who’s receiving the Video Vanguard award, there will be exciting performances by Anitta, Karol G, and Peso Pluma, making it a special night for Latin music fans.

If you’re into pop music, you won’t want to miss performances by Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, and Demi Lovato. Rock enthusiasts can look forward to sets by Fall Out Boy and Måneskin. And for K-pop lovers, Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER will be there to delight you.

For country music fans, Kelsea Ballerini is also on the lineup. Interestingly, the show falls on September 12, which also marks Ballerini’s 30th birthday, highlighting her dedication to performing on this special occasion.

Doja Cat MTV VMAs

This year’s main show lineup features eight artists from outside the U.S., highlighting the increasingly global nature of the music scene. Shakira and Karol G hail from Colombia; Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER represent South Korea; Anitta comes from Brazil; Måneskin is from Italy; Peso Pluma is based in Mexico, and NAV represents Canada. It’s a truly international musical celebration!

Before the main event, Saweetie will be the host of a 90-minute pre-show, with assistance from Nessa, Dometi Pongo, and Kevan Kenney. You can catch the pre-show live from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Eastern Time and Pacific Time on MTV, MTV2, CMT, and Logo.

Shakira will make history as the first South American artist to be honored with the Video Vanguard Award. Diddy follows in the footsteps of previous recipients, including Foo Fighters in 2021 and Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2022, as the third recipient of the Global Icon Award.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift dominates the 2023 VMA nominations with an impressive 11 nods, which includes three she received in social categories on September 1st. She’s followed closely by SZA with eight nominations. Other notable artists with multiple nominations include BLACKPINK, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, and Olivia Rodrigo, each with six nominations. Kim Petras and Sam Smith earned five nominations each, while Beyoncé, Diddy, Drake, Ice Spice, Karol G, Metro Boomin, Shakira, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER all received five nominations as well. It’s a star-studded lineup at this year’s VMAs!

The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards are produced by Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ignjatovic, the co-founder of Den of Thieves. Barb Bialkowski holds the role of co-executive producer, while Alicia Portugal and Jackie Barba are the executives in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is responsible for overseeing celebrity talent as the executive in charge, and Lisa Lauricella is the music talent executive.
