On Wednesday, August 16, the iconic R&B singer released the long-awaited music video, filled with many nods to the recent relationship issues of the actress Keke Palmer, along with plenty of early Usher vibes.
The video begins similar to Usher’s 2001 hit “U Don’t Have To Call,” with Keke Palmer sliding around in a white robe while preparing for a night out at the Confessions crooner’s concert.
When Keke gathers with her friends, Usher’s lyrics convey a self-serving message that implies he isn’t concerned about causing problems in someone’s relationship.
“Somebody said that your boyfriend’s looking for me/ Oh that’s cool, that’s cool/ Well he should know I’m pretty easy to find/ Just look for me wherever he sees you,” he sings out over the lively, danceable beat.
In the middle of the video, Keke Palmer sings along to Usher’s song “U Remind Me” in an elevator. When she steps out, the video takes inspiration from Usher’s “U Don’t Have to Call” video, and she transforms into Usher, imitating his outfit and dance moves.
Usher himself then appears, wearing the same outfit against a backdrop that resembles Sin City. Towards the end of the amusing video, Keke wakes up in bed to a phone call, realizing that she had been dreaming the entire scenario and ended up sleeping through Usher’s concert.
She then says: “Shit, I’m so tired! I’m a mother… after all,” accompanied by a playful wink — a clever reference to her boyfriend’s previous criticism.
Usher’s “Boyfriend” video and his serenade of Keke Palmer during his Las Vegas residency in July seemed to have crossed a line for Darius Jackson.
As reported by PEOPLE, Jackson has “moved on” from the actress, with whom he shares a five-month-old child.
Jackson previously criticized Keke’s outfit at Usher’s Vegas show, saying her see-through dress wasn’t appropriate for a mother.
“It’s the outfit tho… you’re a mom,” he tweeted, publicly criticizing his partner.
Despite the backlash, Jackson stood by his opinion, added “We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is.
“This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”
