Pop Smoke‘s murder remains one of the most senseless incidents in Hip Hop history. However, new details have come to light, suggesting that his killing might be linked to another more recent murder of an L.A. rapper.
As per TMZ, Jaquan Murphy, who was originally arrested in connection to the murder of the Queens rapper back in 2020 but subsequently cleared of the crime, is the brother of Javonnta Murphy, better known as Sirtanky.
On July 31, Sirtanky’s body was discovered naked and stuffed inside a barrel. When his remains were found, law enforcement was unsure about the potential motive behind his tragic murder.
However, it has now been revealed that he is the brother of Jaquan Murphy, who is currently awaiting trial in Los Angeles, CA for an unrelated murder. The LAPD suspects that Sirtanky’s murder might be a ‘revenge killing’ for Pop Smoke.
However, this theory is only speculation, and the investigation is still in the early stages.
Sirtanky’s body was found on July 31 inside of a metal barrel that had washed up on the shores of Malibu Lagoon State Beach in California.
Lt. Hugo Reynaga from the sheriff’s homicide bureau verified that the metal barrel initially appeared on the shores of Malibu on Sunday (July 30). During that time, the maintenance worker who discovered the barrel didn’t open it, nor did he suspect anything out of the ordinary about it.
On Monday (July 31), a lifeguard found the 55-gallon container within the Malibu lagoon. Upon bringing it ashore, the lifeguard opened the container and discovered the body of the L.A. rapper. The lifeguard revealed that he decided to open the container due to its “suspicious” weight.
When the barrel was opened, Sirtanky;s body had not undergone significant decomposition, suggesting that his death might have been relatively recent.
Police didn’t provide more details about Murphy’s body, but they’ve confirmed an ongoing homicide investigation. Murphy was found naked in a sealed barrel, confirming to police that his death was a result of foul play.
Detectives have stated that the barrel came from what they believe to be a printing company. They are currently trying to determine if there is a connection between the printing company and the circumstances surrounding Sirtanky’s death.
