Justin Wright, Atlanta multi-platinum songwriter has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend.
Wright was accused of shooting 20-year-old aspiring singer and Durham, North Carolina resident Wilanna Bibbs in the afternoon hours of May 9, 2021, at a home in Davenport, according to Quad-City Times.
In Davenport, Wright and Bibbs were visiting Wright’s family, according to Scott County Attorney Kelly Cunningham (via Yahoo News).
A jury found Wright guilty of first-degree murder on April 10 after nearly 90 minutes of deliberation. Just two months later, on June 15, Judge Tamra Roberts sentenced the 34-year-old to life in prison without parole.
“This came out how we wanted it to come out,” said Wilanna’s mother, Cassandra Bibbs during her victim impact statement.
Thomas Bibbs, Wilanna’s father who joined via video conference, noted how the senseless murder was the result of an argument over $70 and that Wright was “the clown” he warned his daughter about, all along.
The family continued by expressing gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts in conducting the investigation as well as Scott County Attorney Kelly Cunningham, who led Wright’s prosecution.
During their victim impact statements, several family members who were in attendance said they could not find it in their hearts to forgive Wright but that maybe God could, and they hoped he could find a way to become a better person on a daily basis.
Wright meanwhile declined to make a statement.
After hearing statements from Bibbs’ loved ones, Judge Roberts affirmed that the court had no discretion in determining Wright’s sentence. The unanimous decision would be life in prison.
Wright, who goes by the name J Wright, founded Camp Entertainment Worldwide in 2011. Numerous A-list performers have collaborated with his company, including DJ Khaled, Bow Wow, Timbaland, and Kash Doll.
